Quanta Computer is currently actively expanding production outside of mainland China, with more than 60% of its estimated server motherboard shipments being supplied by production lines based in Taiwan. The company is also ramping up production in Thailand to meet its cloud service customers in North America, Digitimes research shows.

 

Other suppliers are also planning to set up new factories in Southeast Asian countries, including Thailand, Malaysia and Vietnam.

 

Previously, according to Nikkei, Apple had asked its top supplier, Foxconn, to start manufacturing MacBooks in Vietnam as early as around May, sources told Nikkei. Apple has been working to expand production locations outside of China for all of its major product lines. But it took longer to produce MacBooks due to the complex supply chains required to manufacture the laptops.

 

"After completing the production of Macbooks, all of Apple's flagship products will basically have one more production base outside of China... iPhones in India and MacBooks, Apple Watchs and iPads in Vietnam. ", a source told Nikkei Asia. What Apple wants now is for each product to have a manufacturing facility outside of China.

 

 

 

 

The company has been planning to move part of its MacBook production to Vietnam for nearly two years and has set up a trial production line, Nikkei Asia previously reported. Apple produces between 20 million and 24 million MacBooks a year.

An executive from Inventec, a major supplier to HP and Dell, said: "Overall, China's interest in low-cost manufacturing is waning, and many US customers now want some choice. replace production locations outside of China".

 

Apple's diversification in Vietnam began with AirPods, which entered mass production in Vietnam in 2020. The company also moved part of its iPad and Apple Watch production to Vietnam this year. , Nikkei Asia first reported, and in October it announced it had started production of the iPhone 14 in India, just weeks after its release.

 

Sources told Nikkei Asia that Apple aims to significantly increase iPhone production from India this year and next, with the aim of turning the country into another key manufacturing base. Apple also aims to move part of its AirPods and Beats headphone production to India, Nikkei Asia previously reported.

 

Apple did not respond to Nikkei Asia's request for comment. Foxconn declined to comment.
