Population grouping by income: Are you in the top percent of the richest in Vietnam and the world?

To be in the top 5% of the richest in Vietnam, an individual needs an annual income at purchasing power parity of $31,398. To reach the top 10%, the number is 20,609 USD.

 

According to data collected from the World Inequality Database, in 2021, on a global scale, those with an annual income higher than $178,497 (PPP) will be in the 1% group. the richest people in the world, i.e. they earn more than 99% of the rest of the global population. To be in the top 10% of the richest people in the world, the number is 53,029 USD.


To reach the top 20%, 30%, 40% and 50%, the numbers are 30,629 USD, 20,862 USD, 14,019 USD and 9,612 USD respectively.

Meanwhile, to be in the top 1% of wealthiest Americans, an individual needs to earn at least $478,645 in annual pre-tax income. This threshold is $100,000 higher than the top 1% in Germany ($314,112) and Canada ($282,862).

 

 

 


On the other hand, an adult in Ethiopia only needs to earn $39,278 to be in the top 1% of the country's richest. Ethiopia is one of the poorest countries in the world—according to World Bank estimates, around 27% of Ethiopia's population is thought to be currently living below the poverty line.

 

In Vietnam, also according to the World Inequality Database, in order to be in the top 1% of the population with the largest assets in Vietnam, an individual needs to have an average income according to the maximum purchasing power parity. the minimum is 72,715 USD.

To make it to the top 5%, individuals need an annual income of $31,398. To reach the top 10%, the number is 20,609 USD.


To be in the top 20%, an individual needs an annual income of $14,104. The thresholds for the top 30%, 40%, and 50% are more than $10,500, $8,000, and $6,400.


If a Vietnamese person's annual income at purchasing power parity is below the threshold of $3,984, that individual is in the poorest 30% of the population.
